When I embarked on Conversations, I had been taking stock of what it was, exactly, that my work was about, partly because of the intense focus I'd had while working on Pyramid Suite. Analyzing my own work was a difficult process as, until that time, I had given my creative intuition free reign. In looking through hundreds of drawings, I realized that communication was a common thread people and other beings communicating on multiple levels in myriad ways. So I decided to simplify this concept of communication into "conversations."
Among the questions I asked myself as I developed the series were: How do we converse with ourselves? With others? In what contexts do we find ourselves in conversation?
Conversations made its online debut shortly after its completion in 1997, on a now-defunct Geocities website of mine.
The images are made at a 1.4:1 aspect ratio which, as far as I know, is not a standard ratio for anything. I arrived at this proportion based on wanting slightly wider images than in Pyramid Suite, the series that I made prior to starting this one. The proportions for Pyramid Suite were based a combination of factors: the source sketches, what looked good on the screen, and what would fit on my tiny 13" monitor with all of the control palettes of my software.
